ROV WET WELL INSPECTION

Remote inspection of a difficult-to-access wet well without intrusive conventional entry methods.

An ROV was deployed inside a wet well to capture clear visual evidence of internal and submerged conditions, helping the client review asset condition with reduced disruption and lower access burden.


OVERVIEW

A client required a visual inspection of a wet well to assess condition, identify visible issues, and support maintenance planning. The asset presented a difficult inspection environment due to restricted access, submerged internal areas, and the practical limitations associated with conventional inspection methods.

To obtain clear visual evidence while reducing access complexity and disruption, an ROV was deployed to carry out a remote inspection of the wet well. The system captured video and still imagery from within the asset, allowing the client to review visible condition without relying on a more intrusive conventional inspection approach.


THE CHALLENGE

The client needed to inspect the internal condition of a wet well in order to better understand asset condition, identify visible build-up, deterioration, blockage risk, or structural concerns, and support maintenance decision-making.

Wet wells are often difficult assets to inspect using traditional methods. They may have restricted entry points, enclosed internal environments, submerged zones, limited visibility, and operational constraints that make direct inspection more complex. In many cases, conventional inspection would involve a more intrusive setup, greater access planning, and additional operational controls before inspection could begin.

For the client, the challenge was to obtain reliable visual evidence from inside the wet well without introducing unnecessary disruption, increased safety exposure, or a more resource-intensive conventional inspection method.

WHY CONVENTIONAL METHODS WERE LESS SUITABLE

A conventional inspection approach can introduce several challenges when dealing with wet well environments.

Safety considerations

Wet wells can create elevated safety risks where personnel access is considered. Restricted internal environments, submerged areas, uncertain footing, poor visibility, and additional site controls can all increase the complexity of carrying out a conventional inspection safely.

Access limitations

Physical access is often one of the main barriers to effective inspection. Wet wells may have limited entry points, confined internal dimensions, and submerged areas that are difficult to inspect directly using traditional methods. Even where access is technically possible, it may still be impractical or inefficient to obtain the level of visual evidence the client requires.

Higher cost and disruption

Traditional methods can also increase the total inspection burden. Depending on the site and asset, a conventional approach may require more planning, more personnel, more control measures, and greater coordination with site operations. The client may prefer to avoid unnecessary intervention while still obtaining clear inspection evidence.

For this project, the client required a lower-disruption solution that could still provide useful and reviewable internal inspection outputs.

ROBOTIC INSPECTION APPROACH

To address these challenges, an ROV was used to carry out a remote inspection of the wet well.

The ROV was deployed into the asset to capture high-quality video and still imagery of visible internal areas, submerged surfaces, and any locations of interest. This enabled the client to review condition within the wet well without relying on a more intrusive conventional inspection setup.

Using the ROV, the inspection focused on:

  • Assessing visible internal condition,
  • Reviewing submerged and difficult-to-reach areas,
  • Identifying visible build-up, blockage, damage, or deterioration where present,
  • Capturing clear visual evidence for review,
  • Documenting observations to support reporting and maintenance planning.

 

This approach allowed the inspection to remain focused on the client’s actual requirement: obtaining practical visual evidence from a difficult-to-access wet well in a controlled and efficient manner.

A key part of the inspection was the ability to obtain clear visual evidence from wet well areas that would otherwise be more difficult or more disruptive to inspect using conventional methods.

The ROV provided imagery of internal walls, submerged zones, benching, base areas, pipe entries, and visible condition features. This gave the client a clearer understanding of the wet well environment and supported identification of any issues requiring further attention.

This gave the client a practical basis for reviewing visible condition, identifying any areas of concern, and planning any further maintenance, cleaning, monitoring, or follow-up inspection activity that may be required.

By using an ROV, the client was able to inspect a difficult-to-access wet well in a way that reduced access complexity, limited disruption, and avoided the need for a more operationally demanding conventional inspection approach.
